What do we
watch and when?

Discover the nation's viewing habits

In a world of on-demand streaming services and faster broadband options such as Full Fibre Broadband (FTTP), we can now choose between thousands of films and TV shows to watch whenever we want. Not only is there already so many options, but streaming libraries are continuously adding more series and films to keep us on our toes (we’re looking at you Stranger Things and The Umbrella Academy). With an abundance of choice, what do we choose to watch and when? What do we watch when we’re trying to relax or when we’re bored? How many of us choose to pop on something funny to cheer ourselves up, or cry to a sad love-story instead? To find out, we’ve surveyed 2,000 UK respondents asking about their viewing habits.

We all love to laugh

It comes as no surprise that comedy is the top genre we pick in a variety of situations. Whether we’re unwell, bored, or just want to relax, we tend to opt for something to lift our spirits and make us giggle uncontrollably.

If you’re looking for a pick-me-up, comedy is a safe bet as one in five viewers choose to put on a funny film when they’re feeling down (22%). Likewise, 11% of our surveyed viewers try to cure their hangover by watching a comedy. For those that are going through a breakup, 14% try to cheer themselves up with a film or show that will make them laugh. However, some prefer to indulge in the blues with rom-coms being the second most popular genre to watch during a breakup, followed by the romance category itself.
