Gigabit internet explained

Gigabit internet can deliver speeds of up to 1 Gbps, which is the equivalent of 1,000 Mbps. It's only available in locations with a Full Fibre connection, also known as fibre to the premises (FTTP).

How Does Gigabit internet work?

Gigabit internet works just like our Full Fibre broadband, using fibre-optic cables that run all the way to your home.

While gigabit speeds are still rolling out across the UK,our Full Fibre is already available in many areas, offering speeds of up to 900 Mbps. That’s seriously fast, and more than enough for most households.

If Full Fibre isn’t available where you live just yet, we also offer part-fibre broadband (FTTC), which uses fibre to the street cabinet and copper cables to your home.

How fast is gigabit internet?

To be classed as gigabit, a broadband connection needs to deliver average download speeds of 1,000 Mbps. While we don’t currently offer gigabit internet, we currently have a mind-blowing deal on our Full Fibre 900 plan. It delivers average speeds of 900 Mbps – that’s 24x faster than standard broadband – and is built for busy homes, big downloads, and buffer-free streaming.

Can I get gigabit broadband?

We don’t offer gigabit broadband just yet, but our Full Fibre packages are our most reliable ever. With speeds up to 900 Mbps, they’re perfect for streaming, gaming, and working from home.

As the UK’s full fibre rollout continues, more homes are gaining access to these ultrafast speeds. Use our postcode checker to see what’s available in your area.

Do I need gigabit broadband?

You might not need gigabit speeds, but you’ll definitely feel the benefit of Full Fibre broadband if:

  • You’ve got a busy household with lots of devices online at once
  • You work from home and need a rock-solid connection
  • You regularly upload or download large files
