"Slumdog" tops box office again

LONDON (Reuters) - Oscar hopeful "Slumdog Millionaire," benefiting from a wave of publicity and news coverage over the past week, held on top spot at the UK box office, according to Screen International on Tuesday.

Most films' takings in Britain fall off after their openings but the much-hyped story of a Mumbai boy searching for love through a TV quiz game took 2.8 million pounds in its third weekend, compared with 2.6 million in its second.

Tom Cruise came in at No. 2 with the World War Two story of the plot to kill Hitler, "Valkyrie."

Horror movie "My Bloody Valentine" rose a place to three while "Seven Pounds," with Will Smith as a man bent on helping strangers, slipped from two to four.

New at five was "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans," a prequel in the vampire and werewolves series.

Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott mentoring young offenders were down three places at six with "Role Models," while Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway battling over a double-booking at the altar in "Bride Wars" were down two places at seven.

Disney talking-dog movie "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" was also down two, at eight.

Making its debut at nine was "Frost/Nixon," the movie of the celebrated 1977 TV interviews with Michael Sheen as David Frost and Frank Langella as President Richard Nixon.

The animals of "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" were unchanged at 10.
