Phillippe auditions for captain america

Ryan Phillippe is the latest actor linked to the title role in Captain America - after confirming he's set up an audition for the superhero movie.

Comedian John Krasinski, Brothers star Patrick Flueger, Cloverfield's Mike Vogel and Smallville actor Michael Cassidy are among the hopefuls trying out for the forthcoming action adventure.

Cruel Intentions actor Phillippe also wants to play the high-flying hero - and he's meeting with movie bosses in a bid to win the part.

He tells MTV, "(I) actually am going in to meet on Captain America, which is kind of cool. After Superman, he was kind of my favourite."

Gossip Girl hunk Chace Crawford has also been linked to the high-flying role, although he's yet to confirm his commitment to the audition process.

The First Avenger: Captain America is expected to be released in July 2011.
