Weinstein brushes off moore's lawsuit threat

Movie producer Harvey Weinstein is confident of legal victory if singer Sam Moore goes through with his threat of a lawsuit over new movie Soul Men - because he insists the film is not based on the legendary star's life.

Soul Men stars Samuel L. Jackson and late comedian Bernie Mac as an estranged R+B duo who plot their chart comeback.

Grammy winner Moore claims the story is too similar to his own career with late musician Dave Prater when they performed as Sam + Dave.

He has been in touch with his lawyers with a view to filing suit over Soul Men, claiming it infringes trademark rights over their song Soul Man, and alleging it is defamatory.

The Weinstein Company's attorney, Bertram Fields, counters the producer has sent Moore a copy of the script to prove the huge differences in the career of Sam + Dave and the characters in the film.

But Moore is still unhappy.

In legal letters sent to The Weinstein Company, Moore says, "The film is sexist, racist and embarrassing, and that's not what Sam + Dave were about... It's so amateurish, so stupid, and I'm surprised that Samuel L. Jackson is involved in this. But when you read the script, all you see if vulgarity. Every other word is the 'N-word' or 'M-f' and it's just not right. They have b**tardised my whole story."

However, Fields is sure Moore will fail in any attempt to win "significant" compensation for his allegations.

He says, "Months ago, we received Mr Moore's claim and told him he had none.

"As he could readily see from the script we sent him, Soul Men is not, in any part or respect, based on Mr Moore's life. It tells a different story about different people. If Mr Moore decides to file a lawsuit, he will lose." (MT/WNBIN/LR)
