When in 1937 Laurence Olivier announced from the stage of the Old Vic "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight a great actress has been born" he wasn't wrong. Vanessa Redgrave went on to become one of Britain's finest. She was also extremely controversial, visiting Cuba in 1962, teaching Marxism in Hollywood and declaiming "Zionist hoodlums" in her Oscar acceptance speech for Julia.
