Having spent years in regional theatre, Kathy Bates eventually broke through on the New York stage, only to have more glamorous actresses take her roles when her hit plays were adapted for the Big Screen. Thankfully, she persisted and, at 42, scored a huge hit and won an Oscar as psycho nurse Annie Wilkes in Stephen King's terrifying Misery.
