A brief look at what the odds looked like for this year's Oscars ceremony.

Oscar Odds
Avatar or The Hurt Locker?
Best Film Odds

James Cameron has been effusive in his praise for his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow's achievements with The Hurt Locker. But another virtual shut-out meant that Avatar came away with mainly technical awards. That's certainly how the bookies saw it as well - both the picture and director markets were locked for both of these films at about 2-1.

Precious
Dead Certs

A small return on your stake If you tried Up to win best animated film, Mo'nique to win best supporting actress and Jeff Bridges to win Best Actor. The odds would've been slim for this tri-cast but it was always very unlikely that any of them would lose.

Upsets?

With many of the favourites locked in, strange things do happen... sometimes. Even though 'overnight sensation' Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor, it was not beyond the bounds of possibility that seasoned veteran Christopher Plummer might just edge it with sentimental votes for his role in The Last Station. Plummer odds were as high as 25-1.

Best Actress
Ladies' Night

Most British audiences will be surprised to learn that Sandra Bullock was favourite to win the Best Actress category all along for her role in The Blind Side, and her hugely successful career, which has seen hit after hit, was finally rewarded. She was less than even money to win, while her nearest rival was Meryl Streep at over 3-1 for her role in Julie&Julia.

Best Foreign Film
Best Foreign Film

Just as The Hurt Locker and Avatar battled it out at for the top slot, Best Foreign Language nominees Un Prophete and The White Ribbon were neck and neck.as well. And although there was some value with odds for the French at 2.5 to 1 compared to 1.5 to 1 for the Austrian entry, they both lost out to outsider, the Argentinian 'El Secreto de Sus Ojos' at 8 to 1.
