Bridges is the strong favourite at the Oscars, but the relatively late release of Crazy Heart may have an impact on his chances in Britain. However, he is bound to be a popular choice for many voters.
Andy Serkis
Serkis' extraordinary performance as the late Ian Dury - including letting one side of his body atrophy in order to portray his condition - is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year. It would be a surprise if he triumphed, but not undeserved.
Jeremy Renner
Also nominated for an Oscar, Renner has to overcome the fact that he is a virtual unknown in this country.
Colin Firth
Firth has been highly admired for his turn as the college professor mourning the loss of his partner, and he could well be the man to accept the award in this category.
George Clooney
There's a growing feeling that while Clooney gives a more than adequate show in Up In The Air, he doesn't really stretch himself as much as the other actors in this category, and as a result he has to be considered an outsider for the prize.
