"I've stopped dyeing my hair now. The next stage is to get them to stop covering up my bald patch with make-up, twigs, sticks and poo."
Derren Victor Brown was born on February 27, 1971, in Croydon, Surrey. His father was the swimming teacher at his school. Derren claims he has always been interested in psychology and using it for his own ends. He says of his childhood: "I was a very good liar and revoltingly charming." He also became intrigued by magic tricks, but didn't take that or psychology seriously until he enrolled at Bristol University to study Law and German.
Despite originally planning a law career, Brown changed his mind after seeing a stage show by Martin S Taylor. Upon graduating, he began developing his skills as a psychological magician and illusionist. His big break came in 1999 when Channel 4 asked him to create a TV show. The result was 2000's Derren Brown: Mind Control. He followed it up with specials Derren Brown Plays Russian Roulette Live, Seance, Messiah and The Heist, as well as series including Trick of the Mind. His stage shows, including stints in London's West End, are sought-after events. Away from TV, he has written three books, enjoys taxidermy and is a keen artist.
