Fancy hunting down the carp version of Moby Dick? Here are the UK's best carp lakes to catch that elusive monster. Don't forget your rod licence, which you can buy online from the Environment Agency

Creedy Lakes, Crediton, Devon

What's it got?
Two spring-fed lakes in peaceful, pretty surroundings with lots of reputedly hard-fighting koi, mirror and common carp. The commons go up to around the 30lb mark. As you sit, idling the hours away, you might spot deer, as well as kingfishers and other rare birds.

Cost and rules
Day tickets (5.30am-11pm) cost £6 for one or two rods, £10 for three rods. No night fishing. No dogs. Nut baits banned. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Beaver fishery, LIngfield, Surrey

What's it got?
There are nine lakes and a stretch of Eden Brook, with all kinds of fish species. Snipe and Tuscany are the main carp lakes, with the common and mirror varieties, weighing in at up to 27lb (you'll need a minimum line strength of 15lb). Tuscany is particularly lovely when the yellow iris is in flower. There's also a cafe, open daily.

Cost and rules
Day tickets (7am-7pm) cost £10 with one rod. Second and third rods cost £5 each. Night fishing is available. Over-18s only on Snipe and Tuscany. Chick peas, bloodworm, joker and peanut baits banned.

Furnace Mill Fisheries, Wyre Forest, Worcestershire

What's it got?
It's a well-established, well cared-for fishery in the beautiful Wyre Forest, in north Worcestershire, run by friendly couple Ed and Jane Brown. There are four pools, all of which have carp, most of it in the smaller bracket. Common, mirror, crucian and ghost carp all feature, with beasts of up to 25lb in Willow Pool, where the margins are reputedly very productive. Share those 'one that got away' stories in the snack bar.

Cost and rules?
Day tickets cost £6.50. No ground bait, liquidised baits, joker or wasp grub. One rod per angler only. No dogs.

Celtic Lakes, Dyfed, Wales

What's it got?
Sequestered in quiet countryside four miles from Lampeter, it has six well-stocked lakes, landscaped with native and tropical plants. There are mirror and common carp to 30lb-plus. Elysium, the specimen lake, holds the whoppers, if you're hunting big game. At the end of a hard day's angling you can dine and drink in the clubhouse.

Cost and rules
A day ticket costs £15, and is valid for up to three rods. Dogs are allowed with prior arrangement. All baits are permitted, except shelf-life boilies.

Richworth Linear Fisheries, Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire

What's it got?
With a day ticket you can move between any of seven lakes in this huge complex. Brasenose One, a 32-acre water, has 3,000 fast-growing mirror, common and ghost carp, the record catch standing at 34lb. St Johns Lake's record catch is a rod-busting 44lb.

Cost and rules
A day ticket for up to 12 hours costs £5 for one rod, £14 for two and £20 for three. No booking necessary. Dogs are allowed, and there are no bait restrictions, but multiple baits must be well soaked and cooked. Night fishing is available.

Newbridge Lakes, Burstwick, East Yorkshire

What's it got?
Newbridge Lake is the main water, a beautiful seven-acre stretch surrounded by eight acres of woodland. There are mirror carp up to 28lb-plus and common carp up to 30lb-plus, as well as crucian, grass and ghost carp. The other two lakes, Hariff and Skeckling, are actually small ponds, though there are piles of fish to be found in them, including lots of double-figure carp.

Cost and rules
Day fishing costs £5, plus £1 per extra rod. You can book secure night fishing for £15. No fish over 4lb to be kept in keep nets. Nuts are banned.

Monk Lakes, Maidstone, Kent

What's it got?
Two pleasure lakes, four match lakes, a specimen lake and 2,000 metres of riverbank on the River Beult - it all adds up to 45 acres of water. Puma Lake and Bridges Lake have carp up to 30lb, and Mallard Lake, the specimen lake for the experts, has a fair few 40-pounders â be sure to book, though. There's a caf© in summer.

Cost and rules
A day ticket costs £10 for one rod, £14.50 for two and £18.50 for three. The specimen lake costs £25 for two rods. No nuts or beans (unless supplied by Monk Lakes).

Catch 22, Lyng, Norfolk

What's it got?
It's not just a great name â this large, 20-acre lake in the pretty Wensum Valley is attractively landscaped and, in the mid-Nineties, was stuffed full of 2,200 carp, of which 70 per cent are common and 30 per cent mirror. Locals say they're real fighters, too. There's also a nature reserve, and a shop selling tackle, bait, food and refreshments.

Cost and rules
A day ticket (7.30am-7.30pm) costs £15. Night fishing is available. There's a maximum of two rods per person, and peanuts and tiger nuts are banned.

Churchwood Fisheries, Brentwood, Essex

What's it got?
This boutique fishery is set in the owner's rather large back garden. Fishing is allowed on two of the three lakes, Jenkins and Churchwood. In Jenkins there are abundant mirror and common carp in the 20-30lb bracket, and Churchwood is similarly well-stocked. The margins are prolific, and as you angle you may see muntjac deer wandering by, and behold kingfishers visiting the lake.

Cost and rules
A 12-hour ticket costs £15, with a maximum of two rods. Night fishing is available. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Carney Pools, Wolseley Bridge, Staffordshire

What's it got?
Damsel and Dragon are the two well-established pools in this picturesque 40-acre setting. Damsel is great for beginners, with a stong head of carp around 3-4lb. Dragon is for the more experienced rodsmen, who can look forward to common carp in double figures, as well as mirrors and some handsome leather carp. You can buy drinks and snacks from the lodge.

Cost and rules
It costs £6 per day (7am-9pm) with a maximum of two rods per person. Banned baits include nuts, boilies and bloodworm.
