La Maison, The Alpine Club
We stayed in The Alpine Club's La Maison, a fabulous contemporary chalet which sleeps 14 people, set just above St Martin.
Wooden sun-loungers on the balcony, views over the snow-laden village roof tops, comfy sofas around a crackling fire and simple but stylish bedrooms create a stunning living space.
But it’s not just a fabulous interior, at La Maison it’s all about the food. A cooked breakfast, afternoon cakes to die for and, after a few glasses of wine and canapés around the fire, gourmet evening meals.
Offering a personal service is very important to Helen and Chris, owners of The Alpine Club. “We want all our guests to have a fabulous time and to feel that they’re home from home”, says Helen. If only I had a handsome chef like Ben to whip up such fabulous food for me back in London.
Every evening Ben produced a delicious, inventive five course dinner worthy of any of the finest restaurants I’ve ever eaten in using mainly locally sourced produce. From a delicious starter of pigeon with fois gras to a velvety steak, local Alpine cheeses and stunning deserts, all courses were hearty, tasty and beautifully presented. If you’re veggie or have any other dietary requirements you’ll be well catered for too.
Helen claims that skiing is a ‘zero calorie holiday’, the day time exercise cancelling out the evenings’ gourmet excesses. I’m not so sure about that in La Maison, particularly as Ben parcelled up a couple of slices of cake left over from tea for us to take up on the slopes each day…
“It’s not like staying in paid accommodation, it’s more like being a guest at a friend’s house”, said Lesley one of our chalet mates. Around 50% of the guests are repeat visitors and it’s not hard to see why. “Its good value because there’s always great food and wine, good company and there’s a friendly atmosphere in the chalet” said Claire who had come back for the second time in two months with Richard, her now-fiancé, who proposed on arrival. Ahhhh.
