Next up was a trip to the stunning Blue Mountains which can be reached in around 2 hours from Sydney if you're travelling by car, which I decided to do.
With over 1 million hectares of World Heritage listed bushland, and with over 140km of walking trails, I had high hopes for my visit and I wasn't to be disappointed. And if you're wondering what you can expect from your visit, there¢¢¬¢¢s a list as long as my arm.
Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort
As one of Australia's most accessible wilderness areas there's definitely plenty to explore and for the more adventurous of you there are numerous climbing, caving, hiking and canoeing activities to tie yourself up with. I however decided to start with something a little more relaxing and checked straight into the 5-star Lilianfels Resort and Spa. Located in what looked like one of the best cliff-top positions, the resort has plenty to offer, from the heated swimming pools to fine dining in the restaurant.
Book a room at Lilianfels
But of course you don't visit somewhere like the Blue Mountains to stay indoors all day, which is why I decided it was a good idea to book up with Tread Lightly Eco Tours who specialise in guided tours in the comfort of a 4x4 vehicle - especially handy when you see some of the hills! My guide for the whole day was owner/operator Tim, who can't help but knock your socks off with his endless knowledge - and with 40 years of experience in the area, I felt like I was making the best possible use of my time. The tour takes you away from the usual tourist hot-spots, and I really felt like I was immersed in the wilderness. Highly recommended.
The Scenic Skyway at Scenic World
There are other options, of course, and you could spend a good few hours at Scenic World, which handily was just a short drive from the accommodation. One of the best things about the attraction is just how accessible they make the area. With a glass-bottomed cable car and the world's steepest train (it sounds scary but trust me, you'll love it) taking you to an engaging rainforest boardwalk, Scenic World is definitely an attraction suited to the whole family.
