Stonehenge, Amesbury, Wiltshire

The world's most famous prehistoric site originated 5,000 years ago, as a circle of wooden posts. The stone circle we see today was completed around 3,500 years ago – so it's a spring chicken in comparison.

Hundreds of people were involved in its creation. In the third building phase, rocks weighing up to 45 tons were somehow brought from the Marlborough Downs, 20 miles away. The stones originally formed a complete circle, topped with a lintel and held together with some clever carpentry.

About half the original arrangement survives – some rocks have been swiped or damaged, others have fallen down. But it's still a magnificent, mysterious wonder.
