Fountains Abbey, Ripon, North Yorkshire

That Henry VIII fellow – tsk. If he wasn't hacking the heads off his wives, he was sacking some of the country's loveliest buildings. Dating back to 1132, this Cistercian abbey, which lies in glorious countryside, represented the pinnacle of the architectural achievements of the age, and it makes for one of the UK's most splendid ruins.

As well as wandering around the atmospheric remains of this vast complex, you can admire the splendid Studley Royal Water Garden next door. Keen photographers will be clicking like mad at every turn.
