UK's best ruins
Botallack Mine, Pendeen, Cornwall Tin and copper mining once dominated Cornwall's Atlantic coast, with men and boys working amid crashing machinery, but now the old buildings lie spookily dormant with only the sound of the sea to be heard. Botallack, down on the county's western tip, is now owned by the National Trust. It's the most evocative coastal mine, and was unusual in that it had dangerous mining tunnels beneath the seabed. The mine closed in 1914, but there are extensive ruins to explore, including the restored engine houses and the remains of the arsenic refinery. You might spot dolphins and basking sharks offshore too. More info:
