Battersea Power Station, London Every few years, since it closed in 1983, a new consortium has come along with big plans for this iconic London landmark, Europe's largest brick building. And every time, those plans come to nothing, leaving it in a state of magnificent decline. Built in the 1930s in Art Deco style by Giles Gilbert Scott (designer of the red telephone box), it sits on the south side of the Thames, and graces the cover of the 1977 Pink Floyd album, Animals. The building isn't safe to enter, but there are great views from the Thames – take a tourist boat upriver from Westminster Bridge. More info:Find a holiday park near London
