Leeds Castle, Kent

What's it like?
It's certainly a looker, poised on an island of the River Len. You can admire the opulent rooms, and there's an aviary, a small golf course, a rather fiendish maze and – bizarrely – a museum of dog collars. You can even book a sunrise or sunset balloon flight here.

What's the story?
Everyone's put their mark on this place in the 900 years since it was built. Edward I, and later Henry VIII, made a lot of changes, and the American Lady Baillie, the castle's last private owner, did a lot of decorating in the 1920s.
