Caerphilly Castle, South Wales

What's it like?
Mention it to a son or daughter of south Wales and they'll go all misty-eyed – and it's certainly a stirring sight, occupying on a 30-acre island created by its water defences. One of Europe's biggest fortresses, it even has a leaning tower to rival Pisa's.

What's the story?
It was built in Norman times by Gilbert de Clare. The ghost of his missus, the Green Lady – who dropped dead when he insensitively announced he had hanged her lover – is said to haunt the ramparts. The castle was restored in the 19th century.
