Alnwick Castle, Northumberland What's it like?
The 'Windsor of the north' has been home to the Percy family (the Dukes of Northumberland) for 700 years. It's open throughout the summer, with archaeology exhibits, military displays and a beautiful formal garden. Kids can get their chain mail on for Knight's Quest interactive exhibition, then try out their skills in the new Dragon's Quest.
What's the story?
Built in 1096 to stave off Scottish invasion, it later featured in the Wars of the Roses and was renovated extensively through the centuries. More recently, it starred as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies.
