Hotspots and Security

With nearly 10,000 hotspots dotted around the country, the UK has more public wireless hotspots + per person than any other nation in the world. But how can you be sure to find one when you need one? The simplest way is to check before you leave home, on a Wi-Fi directory such as this Hotspot Locator. Simply type in your destination city or postcode, anywhere in the world, and it shows the nearest free and commercial hotspots. In your browser, go to the File menu and Save the web page on your hard drive for reference when you arrive.

Of course, you don't always know exactly where you'll be travelling, in which case why not buy a hotspot sniffer? These clever detectors are small enough to slip into your pocket and flash a visible signal when you enter a working Wi-Fi hotspot area. Also some sites have got in on the action to help you locate hotspots when you are on the move.

Safer surfing
Despite the fact that mobile technology supports industry standard and leading third party security solutions, enabling safer notebook connectivity, and the fact that most public hotspots are perfectly safe, it makes sense to take some basic security precautions when you use Wi-Fi hotspots in public.

Here's a brief security checklist to run through each time you use a public hotspot:

  • Always turn on your notebook's firewall. You should also seriously consider investing in additional security software for integrated firewall, anti-virus and anti-spam e-mail protection.
  • Disable File Sharing to prevent others sneaking a look at your documents. From the Start menu, select Settings and Network Connections. Find your Internet connection and right-click to select Properties. Under the General tab, uncheck File and Printer Sharing. You can turn it on again when you return home.
  • Make sure you know whose access point you're connecting to. Think carefully before you hand over your credit card details and if you're in any doubt, don't use the service.
  • Not all threats are digital. Be aware of the people around you - is anyone paying too much attention to your notebook or log-in passwords?
  • Turn off the Wi-Fi chip when you're not using it (usually by pressing a combination of keys - check your notebook's instruction manual). Not only does this prevent unauthorised access, it will extend your computer's battery life, too.
