DVLA requests removal of feature because it breaches its code of ethics
Auto Trader has removed the image-recognition element from its iPhone app.
The popular motoring website said the DVLA has written to it requesting the removal of this feature. This is because the ‘snap’ function, which allowed users to take pictures of cars so they could compare them with models for sale nearby, also allowed consumers to capture images of vehicle licence plates.
Although Auto Trader said the app in no way infringes privacy regulations, the feature does appear to conflict with the DVLA’s code of ethics.
The new app, which was launched a couple of weeks ago, enables users to quickly search for vital vehicle information, making car-buying decisions easier. It allows users to search for information on similar cars and dealers in the area via access to the Auto Trader listings, enabling like for like price comparisons.
Auto Trader said: "the application draws only on publicly available information and does not release owner details or information on where a vehicle is registered."
However, it said it takes consumer security extremely seriously and has happily agreed to comply with the DVLA’s request.
As a result, from today the ‘snap’ function has been removed. Consumers trying to access this function will receive an error message but will still be able to access the core search function outlined above.
