So where now for England? Back home to face the disappoinment of the nation after yet another ignominious exit from a major comeptition for starters. But what then? England were out-played, out-fought and out-thought by a superior German side who made a mockery of English hopes going into the game.
Fabio Capello's future is under serious question, and rightly so after a campaign which promised so much and delivered so little. A narrow escape from a weak group with a solitary 1-0 win over Slovenia was as good as it got for England and Capello must take the lion's share of the blame for England's tactical inflexibility and failure to perform in some of the most disappointing performances many fans have ever seen from the Three Lions.
The players looked hopelessly off the pace throughout and our supposedly world-class performers failed miserably to shine. So much for this being Wayne Rooney's World Cup, he may as well have stayed at home. And our rock-solid defence looked anything but as John Terry allowed himself to be suckered by German tactics. Even Frank Lampard's wrongly disallowed goal failed to paper over the cracks, England were heading only for defeat regardless.
So what did you make of it all? Should Capello stay or go? Where did we go wrong? Are the players just not good enough? Vote in our poll and leave us your thoughts below....
