Our largest spiral-shelled water snail with a dark brown shell comprising five or so whorls; older shells are rather ridged. It favours ponds, lakes and canals and is common only in S and C England. Sometimes found in rather stagnant water; assisted in its uptake of oxygen by the presence of haemoglobin in the blood.
