Living animal sometimes found on sand or mud in shallow water at low tide. More usually encountered when shell of dead animal is washed-up on beach; empty shell often occupied by hermit crab. Shells of larger animals often coated with encrusting sponges and algae. Common and widespread around Britain and Ireland.
