Shell width up to 10cm

Formerly abundant and still fairly common bivalve mollusc in shallow water with gently shelving seabed. Lower shell valve is saucer-like and sits on sand or silt; upper valve is flattened. Outer surface of both valves rough and grey-brown; inner surface smooth with mother-of-pearl coating. Grown commercially.
