A rather conical, dark brown water snail. When moving among water plants, a small plate called an operculum can be seen on the upperside of the foot. If the animal is disturbed, it retreats into its shell and seals itself off with operculum. Favours ponds, canals and lakes. Fairly common and widespread in England, Wales and Ireland; local in S Scotland. Tentacles comparatively long and slender.
