An encrusting, colonial animal which forms tough mats on shaded surfaces of rocks on the lower shore. Individual animals are arranged in a star-like fashion around a common opening. Colour rather variable but usually seen as white stars on a purplish brown background. Widespread; particularly common off W coasts.
