A burrowing marine annelid which is common in muddy estuaries and sandy beaches from the middle shore downwards. Presence often indicated by holes and casts which mark the entrances to its U-shaped burrow. Widespread around British and Irish coasts; often common. Important food for birds such as curlew and godwits.
