An encrusting sponge which often forms large patches on rocky overhangs or in shady crevices from the middle shore downwards on rocky coasts. Colour rather variable but often bright orange, sometimes greenish brown. Spongy surface is pitted with crater-like openings through which seawater passes. Widespread.
