Lesser Stag Beetle

Recalls female stag beetle but has all-black body and proportionately large and broad head and thorax. Rather local but widespread in S and C England, Wales and S Ireland. Larva found in rotting wood and adults feed on sap of deciduous trees including ash and willow. Adults seen May-September but commonest in spring.
