An attractive cardinal beetle, so-called because of scarlet colour of head, thorax and abdomen. Adult seen May­July and often found under flaking bark or in rotting timber; in sunny weather also visits flowers to hunt for small insects. Carnivorous larva lives in rotting wood. Rather local in England and Ireland.
