A distinctive sexton beetle, recognised by orange-red markings on otherwise black elytra; has all-black antennae unlike other closely related species. Often found by turning over animal carcasses. Buries corpses of small mammals and birds on which eggs are laid and larvae feed. Attracted to light. Widespread.
