Grub-like, wingless females located after dark by greenish light emitted from underside of tip to abdomen; this serves to attract winged males. Females usually climb up grass stems and luminosity ceases temporarily if disturbed. Adults do not feed but larvae, which can also emit light, eat snails. Found in meadows and along forest rides and verges. Widespread but local; absent from N.
