A common and widespread species in much of England, Wales and Ireland; in Scotland, rather scarce and restricted mainly to S. Both sexes easily identified by mainly black body with segment eight of abdomen sky blue. Favours ponds, lakes, canals and ditches; tolerant of slightly polluted waters. Flies May­August.
