Length up to 17cm

Flatfish with rounded-oval outline and long dorsal and anal fins separated from tail fin by distinct tail stock; dorsal fin starts near eye. Colour rather variable but usually mottled brown on upperside and pale on underside. Common and widespread on muddy and sandy seabeds around coasts of Britain and Ireland.
