Range includes England, Wales and Ireland but local except in S. Has disappeared from many former haunts and now commonest on grassy heaths and coasts. Orange-brown colour gives fritillary-like appearance but shows small eyespots on wings. Double-brooded, flying April-May and July-September. Larva feeds on grasses.
