A tiny bird, recognised by dumpy proportions, mainly dark brown plumage and habit of frequently cocking tail upright. Generally widespread and common throughout Britain and Ireland although numbers plummet during cold winters. Creeps through low vegetation in search of insects and can look rather mouse-like. Song loud, and warbling, ending in trill and has rattling alarm call.
