Wood Sandpiper Wood Sandpiper
Tringa glareola
Length 20cm

Superficially similar to green sandpiper but more elegant and with longer, yellow legs. Seen mainly as rather scarce passage migrant to shallow wetlands in Britain and Ireland, mostly in August and September with juvenile birds predominating. Very rare breeding species in N Scotland. Has brownish, spangled upperparts, brightest in juvenile birds, and pale belly. In flight, shows conspicuous white rump. White tail has narrow terminal bars, these greater in extent than on green sandpiper. Underwings are mostly white whereas on similar green sandpiper these are black. Flight call a distintive chiff-chiff-chiff.
