Length 12-13cm
Superficially similar to stonechat but male has brown, streaked upperparts and conspicuous pale stripe above eye. Female has similar stripe but plumage otherwise similar to that of female stonechat. A summer visitor, present from May to September. Widespread but local. Common only in W and S Scotland and Wales; very scarce in Ireland and SE England. Favours rank grassland and scrubby slopes. Perches on low wires and bushes. Has
