In non-breeding plumage, superficially similar to redshank but larger and with proportionately longer red legs and red-based bill. Breeds in Scandinavia and seen in Britain and Ireland as passage migrant and occasional winter resident. Winter bird (A) has pale grey upperparts and whitish underparts; juvenile (B) similar but more heavily marked and generally darker. Breeding plumage adult sometimes seen on migration and easily recognised by almost all-black plumage; passes through northwards in May and begins return journey by early July. In flight, all plumages have uniform grey-brown wings. Flight call distinctive chewit.
