Very rare breeder in Scottish Highlands but also scarce passage migrant to coastal districts and local winter visitor, mainly to E coast of Britain and mountains in Scotland. Breeding male has unmistakable black and white plumage. In winter, all birds have variable amounts of buffish orange on breast and face, sandy-brown back and white underparts. Often unobtrusive when feeding on ground but in flight, black and white wings are conspicuous. Tinkling flight call.
