Length 38-44cm

Small but stunning sawbill duck. Annual winter visitor in small numbers from Arctic breeding grounds in Scandinavia and Siberia. Recorded mainly between November and February but often only if severe weather affects mainland Europe forcing birds to move W. Female (B) and immature birds known as 'redheads' and have orange-red cap and nape contrasting with white cheeks and throat; body plumage grey-brown. Favours fish-rich waterbodies including reservoirs and flooded gravel pits. Unpredictable in appearance; can turn up almost anywhere in England and S Scotland but most often seen in E England. Seldom recorded as far W as Ireland.
