Slavonian Grebe

Dumpy and compact grebe with straight bill. Stunning in breeding plumage (A) with black face, striking golden-yellow ear tufts and plumes, brick red neck and underparts, and black back. In winter (B), looks black and white with dark cap, nape and back, and pale underparts. Beady red eye visible only at close range. Rare breeding bird in Scottish Highlands. In winter, Britain receives influx of continental birds and is then widespread and locally common in sheltered coastal waters. Dives well and often for small fish and crustaceans.
