Impressive fish-eating raptor, usually seen near water. Summer visitor, present from May to September. Formerly extinct but now breeds in Scottish Highlands. In flight, looks superficially gull-like with pale underparts and long, narrow wings; shows dark primary feathers and dark carpal patch. Upperparts brown except for pale crown. Catches fish by plunging into water, talons first. Breeds mainly in Scottish Highlands. Easily watched at RSPB's Loch Garten reserve and around Aviemore. On migration, occurs on lakes and reservoirs in England.
