Large, distinctive water bird, the commonest swan in Britain. Adult has pure white plumage, black legs and orange-red bill; black knob at base of bill is smaller in female than male. Young cygnets often seen accompanying mother. Later in season, full grown juvenile has buffish brown plumage and dirty pink bill. When swimming, bird usually holds neck in elegant curve. In flight, has broad wings and shallow but powerful wingbeats which produce characteristic, throbbing whine; birds otherwise silent. Nests beside lakes and rivers. In winter, also on estuaries and sheltered coasts. Widespread in Britain and Ireland.
