Golden Eagle
Aquila chrysaetos
Wingspan 190-25cm
Britain's largest raptor but size often difficult to gauge. Adult soars on long, parallel-sided wings which are constantly flexed as bird rides upcurrents. Tail relatively long. Against sky, adult looks uniformly dark. Immature shows white patch at base of tail and on wings. Brown plumage and golden-yellow mane seen only on perched birds at close range. Relatively common in N and W Scotland.
