Length 36-38cm

Often found in similar habitats to moorhen but easily told by all-black plumage and white bill and frontal shield to head. Has lobed toes which facilitate swimming. Utters distinctive, loud kwoot call. Feeds by upending or making shallow dives in water but also grazes waterside grass. Builds mound nest of waterplants often in full view. Common year-round resident of lakes, flooded gravel-pits and reservoirs in most parts of Britain and Ireland. Numbers boosted in winter by influx of continental birds; then forms large flocks.
