A small resident bird which can sometimes look rather warbler-like. Widespread and fairly common throughout most of mainland Britain and Ireland. Has black and white markings on head with conspicuous white patch on nape. Back and wings slate-grey with two white wingbars, and underparts pale pinkish buff. Found in both coniferous and deciduous woodland and will visit garden bird feeders in winter. Song teecha teecha teecha, higher-pitched and weaker than great tit.
