Smooth Newt Smooth Newt
Triturus vulgaris
Length 8-10cm

Male is particularly well-marked and attractive. In breeding season, shows spotted flanks, undulating crest along back, and orange belly and pale throat with conspicuous spots. Brown female lacks crest and is similar to female palmate newt; distinguished by spotted, not unspotted, throat. Widespread and common across most of mainland Britain; the only newt species in Ireland but there rather scarce. Found in ponds, ditches and lakes from March to September; thereafter, leaves water and hibernates during winter months under fallen logs.
